What is a typing speed test?
A typing speed test measures how many words you can type correctly in a fixed amount of time, expressed as words per minute (WPM). It also tracks accuracy, since typing fast with constant mistakes isn’t actually faster once you factor in the time spent correcting errors. This tool times you automatically, so all you need to do is click into the text box and start typing.
How is WPM calculated?
The standard formula counts every 5 characters (including spaces) as one “word,” then divides by the number of minutes elapsed. So if you type 250 correct characters in 60 seconds, that’s 50 words per minute. This tool calculates it the same way, live, so the number you see updating is the real industry-standard figure — not an estimate.
What’s a good typing speed?
| Level | WPM | Who’s typically here |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Under 30 | Just starting out, hunt-and-peck typing |
| Average | 30–45 | Most casual computer users |
| Above average | 45–65 | Regular office and data-entry work |
| Fast | 65–85 | Professional typists, writers, coders |
| Very fast | 85+ | Competitive typists, transcriptionists |
Tips to improve your typing speed
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;) instead of looking at the keyboard.
- Prioritize accuracy first. Speed follows naturally once your fingers stop making mistakes.
- Practice in short, daily bursts. Ten focused minutes a day beats one long session a week.
- Retake this test regularly. Tracking your WPM over time is the fastest way to see real progress.
Frequently asked questions
Does this typing test work on mobile?
Yes. The passage and input box resize for smaller screens, though typing speed tests are generally more accurate on a physical keyboard.
Why does my accuracy drop when I go faster?
Speed and accuracy are a trade-off for most typists until touch-typing becomes automatic. Slow down slightly and focus on hitting the correct key first — WPM naturally climbs as accuracy stabilizes.
Is my typing data stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Nothing you type is saved, sent, or logged.
Can I use this to practice for a job typing test?
Yes — the WPM and accuracy formula here mirrors the standard method used in most employment typing assessments.
